Bringing sex to the high street, the Ann Summers chain is masterminded by Jaqueline Gold, who went from wages clerk to director of the company in just 8 years. She's now chief exec but the philosophy's the same – to encourage women to feel good about themselves and their sexuality. Stock ranges from novelty gifts – stick–on tattoos and hen night veils –, to frilly lingerie, which is displayed in the many windows of the store – so you can check out the new styles without even going in if you're shy. More adult items, such as light bondage gear – handcuffs, whips – and sex toys are also stocked – they even carry the now infamous Rampant Rabbit vibrator immortalised by Charlotte in Sex and the City. Staff are predominantly women and very friendly, not crowding you but happy to help with queries. And if you're too shy to peruse the shelves, their catalogue will allow you to browse in the comfort of your own home.
