Kirkstall Abbey
If the monks who in–habit–ed – ho ho – this 12th century abbey could see the folks gathered in its grounds today, knocking back four–packs of lager in the sunshine, they'd turn in their graves — everyone knows Monks prefer wine. Lager louts – students – and dog shit aside, the Abbey, located on a lush flood plain on the banks of the River Aire, is a major tourist attraction for the city. Restoration work is under way as we write — until then it just looks like a knackered old church.
